Whether your family is growing, you need an additional living space, or simply don’t feel like you are maximising the space you have, extending your home provides you with the perfect opportunity to elevate your existing home, without having to leave.
At Haus and Home Construction we specialise in extending and expanding upon the existing footprint of your home to create a space that you can live in and love – without having to leave the family home that holds so many precious memories.
When it comes to extending your home, it can often feel overwhelming, and you probably don’t even know where to begin, but it doesn’t have to be with our simple guide to designing your extension.
A Five Step Guide to Designing your Extension
Step 1. Reach out to the Professionals
Once you’ve decided that you want to extend your home, it’s time to reach out to the professionals to get their advice.
Whilst most commonly, the first step will be to reach out to a building designer or an architect, as we have previously touched on (LINK TO BLOG POST 1), we strongly recommended engaging a registered builder at the design stage of any build, or renovation as there are several benefits.
Step 2. Organise a Site Visit
If you choose to engage a builder as well as a building designer or architect, the builder will have the opportunity to visit your site or meet with you to discuss your project in more detail. This allows the builder to really get to understand your vision and start thinking about the design ahead of the design consult.
Step 3. Design Consult and Concept Drawings
This is the exciting step, where your vision comes to life. At this consultation, a builder (if you choose to engage one at the design stage) and a building designer or architect will come out to the site, take all the measurements, and have an in depth discussion as to the design of the space.
If you choose to have a builder involved at this stage, they will be able to provide expertise and industry knowledge to support the design to ensure it is in line, and realistic to your budget, timeline and expectations.
From here, the building designer or architect will go away and pen your vision into a plan.
Step 4. Design Review and Alterations
Once you have your Concept drawings, you can really start to see your vision come to life. It is at this point that you will be able to make any changes before moving to working drawings.
Step 5. Working Drawings
Once you have made any modifications, the design will proceed to working drawings which are the drawings required to be able to construct your dream space.
It is at this point that your builder will be able to provide you a detailed cost breakdown for your build and the construction can begin.
At Haus and Home Construction we are committed to partnering with our clients to support them on their build journey to make the process as seamless and enjoyable as possible.
